Irgo, a 10-year-old German shepherd, was supposed to land in Kansas City with his owners on Tuesday, but United flew him to Japan instead.

Kara Swindle and her two children had taken the United flight from Oregon to Kansas City, Missouri, during a move to Wichita, Kansas.

But when they went to pick up Irgo, they were handed a different dog.

Kara said: ‘I walked over to the kennel and I called his name. And up popped this Great Dane instead of my German shepherd.

‘And it was just instant tears because this wasn’t my dog and I had no idea where my dog was.

‘It has been the absolute worst nightmare. I don’t know how much more I can take.’

United said that the dogs were put on the wrong planes when being moved from connecting flights in Denver.

The airline flew Irgo back to the US on a private plane, the average cost of which is more than $90,000, according to CBS News.

The airline has since apologised to Kara and said they are still investigating how the mix-up happened. (Picture: Facebook)

United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said: ‘We chose the fastest option to reunite the dog with his family.’

The airline has since apologised to Kara and said they are still investigating how the mix-up happened.

Irgo’s misadventure comes a day after a French bulldog puppy died aboard a United flight after a flight attendant told a passenger to put her pet carrier in the overhead bin.
