Year 12 students encouraged to apply for trip of a lifetime

Applications have opened for the Rotary Margaret River Leavers Experience 2018 and Margaret River Senior High School students are being encouraged to register their interest before the end of March.

Successful applicants will embark on an East Timorese adventure in late November 2018 as part of what coordinator Lynne Warren said was a once in a lifetime experience.

“The aim of the program is to provide students with an ‘alternative’ experience in a different country and culture, and to carry out projects that Timorese communities have sought our help and funding,” explained Mrs Warren.

A group of 13 graduates from last year’s senior class headed to East Timor on the tour late last year, citing the trip as an essential experience upon their return.

“It’s absolutely the best thing I’ve ever done, it really was just awesome,” said Bryn Larkin.

“I can’t wait to go back, I feel like now I want to see so much of the world – it was very very cool.”

Students spend the two week journey visiting island communities, working with schools and local groups to build facilities and hand out much-needed hygiene and educational items donated by groups and businesses in the Margaret River area.

“Our project last year was to assist in the development of a Community Kitchen, which will be used by the whole island community for training and development and for larger community meetings,” said Mrs Warren.

“Now we are seeking applications from MRSHS Year 12 students and encouraging them to apply as applications close at the end of March.”

Rotary Margaret River Leavers Experience 2018 application forms are available from Student Services at MRSHS or by calling Lynne 0408 928 482 or Brian 0429 087 065.
