Taylor Swift is known for some cleverly hidden references in her music videos which eagle-eyed fans always spot.
So it’s no surprise that her new video for Delicate also has a few moments which fans have now decoded and believe offer more clues as to the meaning behind the song, one of the best on Reputation, if we do say so ourselves.
The video stars Taylor as she makes her way down a red carpet surrounded by bodyguards, unable to make a move without anyone following her.
She eventually becomes invisible and is able to let go, dancing through the foyer of a hotel, across the reception desk, and out into the rain as she makes her way to the one person who can see her for herself.
As Taylor dances though, fans believe she is spelling out the name Joe – the name of her long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn, whom she began dating in 2016 – through a series of moves one after another.
Her romance with British actor Joe has been kept underwraps but the release of her sixth album, Reputation, sparked further speculation as may tracks are believed to be about him.
At one point she also dances in front of a deli called Joe’s Deli – which, interestingly enough, doesn’t exist in the area of Los Angeles where the video was shot, nor anywhere close to the Golden Gopher, the dive bar she ends up in at the end, leading many to believe that this was created specifically as a clue.
Other hidden moments include references to the track’s song title and it’s positioning on the album, track number five.
Directed by Joseph Kahn, he previously claimed the video would be ‘unexpected and it’s going to be grand’.
Set mostly in Los Angeles’ Millennium Biltmore Hotel – built in 1923, it was the early home to the Oscars ceremony – the video also sees Taylor run through Metro Center, which is Los Angeles’ downtown hub, and of course the Golden Gopher where she is finally seen again.
The bar was founded by President Teddy Roosevelt and stayed open through prohibition before eventually being closed and the reopened in 2004.
