Sam Rockwell has revealed that he does not believe his character of Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is redeemed at the end of the movie.
The debate has been raging among the film industry for weeks as the film has received backlash by many for its portrayal of Dixon, a racist cop in Missouri who is accused of beating up a black man, and director Martin McDonagh was forced to release a statement defending the film.
Now Sam has told press backstage at the Oscars that Dixon and the chracter of Mildred – played by Frances McDormand – have a ‘lot of work to do’.
‘They’re not redeemed at the end of the movie. Maybe some therapy?’ he says, before adding: ‘It’s also a movie. A dark fairytale of some sorts.In real life, we probably would’ve gone to prison.’
Director McDonagh admitted to Metro.co.uk after winning the Bafta for Outstanding British Film that it was not his choice to offer a statement defending his film, and that he believed he was forced to offer a statement to defend his work as it was awards season.
‘If I had a choice I’d let the film speak for itself movies always take five or ten years to be seen as a piece of work that it is, but it’s almost more of an awards season thing that I had to say that,’ he said.
‘But as I feel his character is not redeemed and that’s what the discussion was about, I had to stand up and defend that. I wish I didn’t need to but it’s an interesting debate.’
