Mia McCarthy to return home for trials ahead of Pro

Margaret River surfer Mia McCarthy is eyeing off a spot on the world tour after a sensational effort on the east coast.

McCarthy took on a field of international competitors in the Surfest Newcastle Grandstand Physio Women’s Pro event.

The 18-year-old won her first heat before being knocked out in the second round.

Despite not advancing further, McCarthy’s performance earned her a spot in a 6000 Qualifying Series event, the highest rated event on the qualifying circuit.

“This will help me to get into other Qualifying Series events and build my points up which is a massive bonus,” she said.

“It was really good experience competing with all the top women surfers in the world and seeing how they compete.

“It really pushes myself to keep improving my surfing.”

The Margaret River High School graduate will compete next in Avoca at a Qualifying Series 1000 event before returning to Margaret River.

On April 10, she will compete in the Margaret River Pro trials for a spot in the main championship tour event.

McCarthy said she wanted to compete hard throughout the Qualifying Series and aimed to qualify for the World Surf League Women's Championship Tour.

The Margaret River board riders member credited growing up in the South West for helping her prepare for the big contests.

“Margaret River is the absolute best, so consistent for swell get waves every day which is so good for your surfing,” she said.

“There is lots of variety in waves.

“We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world.”
