State selection for South West star
Busselton’s Ben van Overdijk will don the black and gold this April when he represents WA in Hockey Australia’s under 15 National Championships.
Ben, who plays for Margaret River Hockey Club, said he put in a concerted effort to achieve his first State selection.
“I work on areas that I had struggled in and constantly practised,” he said.
“I was just mentally thinking about hockey and always reflecting on what I could have done better and how to put that in my game.
“When it came to State trials, I figured I’d put in the work and worked hard enough so there was no reason why I couldn’t get in.”
The Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Year 10 student has been part of the South West Academy of Sport for one year and travels to Bunbury weekly for training.
Ben said he would continue to work hard and pursue his hockey goals.
“I’m trying to push it as far as I can but also make sure I have a life outside of hockey as well,” he said.
