The world of fashion is a puzzling one.
On the one hand it gives us some great clothes, yet on the other it gives us a furrowed brow as we gently whisper, ‘WTF’ and wonder if we’re the only ones who just don’t get it.
Last week, designer Kaimin blessed us by sending merkins AKA fanny wigs down the runway at New York Fashion Week, and this week it’s the turn of Gucci, who reckon severed heads and third eyes are what we’ll all be sporting next season.
The Italian brand showcased their new looks at their AW18 show in Milan, with designer Alessandro Michele sending some models down the catwalk carrying excellent duplications of their own heads.
Imagine being one of the models that didn’t get a head – how mad would you be? ‘cos that’s your Halloween costume sorted right there, y’know?
Although there might be a bit of a kerfuffle at airport security, but it’d be worth it.
This model’s severed head’s hair is even nicer than her own, how annoying is that?
Wonderful. Now, if you’re not up for holding a replica of your own head, how about another trend that’s a little less gory?
The third eye.
If you’re a yoga regular, you’ll probably have heard your teachers bang on about the third eye. It’s basically your sixth sense – your mind and your senses working together to make you a little extra.
You use your third eye whenever you feel empathy towards another, as it’s helping you reach out with your creepy sensory tentacle and absorb someone else’s emotions.
Isn’t that wonderful? Why have two eyes when you can have three, y’know?

If we were to semiotically analyse Gucci’s show, we’d probably say that they’re telling us to be more compassionate to others, to trust our intuition, and to take time to take absorb the world around us.
Perhaps the severed heads are symbols of getting out of our own heads and seeing things with a fresh perspective – viewing the world from a different stance, depending on where we hold our heads.
Taking into account how our decisions affect others, those from different socio-economic backgrounds, how a single political decision can reverberate through the world.
Or perhaps…Gucci are just trying to sell clothes.
