Serena Williams has taken a group of girls to see the new Black Panther movie.

The philanthropic star surprised a group of young girls, aged between 7 and 17, who are members of an organisation aiming to increase the number of women of colour in the digital technology space.

Black Girls Code organise programming and game design workshops, and after school hackathons for the girls.

In a post on Instagram, Serena shared: ‘Last night we surprised a group of girls from @blackgirlscode to watch black panther with me in a private screening.

‘We loved the movie and had a awesome time! @alexisohanian thanks!!’

The group of girls look excited to be sharing the moment with the tennis ace, who has recently had her first baby, although there is no sign of Serena in the picture.

Black Panther is an American superhero film based on the Black Panther, a Marvel Comics character. It tells the story of T’Challa, played by actor Chadwick Boseman, and his return home as king of Wakanda.

The film features a plethora of iconic black actors including Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Michael B, Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright and Daniel Kaluuya to name a few.

Just days after its cinematic release, Marvel’s Black Panther has already proven itself to be a box office hit in both the UK and Ireland.

The Ryan Coogler directed film, which had previously made headlines for its predominantly African-American cast, has scored one of the biggest opening days of 2018 to date. Boasting a £2.67 million in ticket sales on it’s opening day of February 13, Black Panther is now the highest-grossing single day movie at the UK box office this year.
