Ryan Thomas revealed that Neighbours bosses offered his role to himself and brother Adam – but Adam couldn’t take it as he’s still tied up with Emmerdale.

Speaking to Lorraine on Friday morning, the 33-year-old soap star confessed for the first time that the reason he got the part is because his brother couldn’t do it.

He told host Christine Lampard: ‘I want to make this clear, this is the first time I’ve ever spoken about it, they offered me and Adam the part but luckily for Adam he was still in Emmerdale.

‘So it was great. I was like “Yes! I’ll take this Adam”.

‘Because if Adam was up for the part I probably wouldn’t get it because he’s just that little bit more talented than I am.’

Ryan joined the soap earlier this month as the mysterious Rafael, who comes to town with a big secret.

And some of the secrets are even mysterious to him, as Ryan has revealed Rafael’s sexuality comes as a surprise to the Erinsborough newbie.

The secretive newcomer is set to have a romance with David, which comes out of the blue for the Northerner, but Ryan exclusively told Metro.co.uk nothing is that black and white.

When asked what it was like to play a gay character, the actor said: ‘The character is very very deep, he’s very troubled and emotional.

‘He’s a roller coaster of a character and he’s caught off guard with any relationship.

‘He’s never really had relationships before and hasn’t been in touch with his own feelings before.’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 8.30am on ITV.
