Marvel’s Black Panther smashes box office figures in the UK and Ireland
Just days after its cinematic release, Marvel’s Black Panther has already proven itself to be a box office hit in both the UK and Ireland.
The Ryan Coogler directed film, which had previously made headlines for its predominantly African-American cast, has scored one of the biggest opening days of 2018 to date.
Boasting a £2.67 million in ticket sales on it’s opening day of February 13, Black Panther is now the highest-grossing single day movie at the UK box office this year.
The superhero flick beats its fellow Marvel releases including Thor: Ragnarok and Doctor Strange who both grossed highly in the UK Box Office at the end of last year.
The Box Office review mirrors the critical acclaim of the groundbreaking movie, with Black Panther gaining a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite a disputing campaign to bring the score down.
Telling the story of T’Challa, played by actor Chadwick Boseman, and his return home as king of Wakanda, the film features a plethora of iconic black actors including Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Michael B, Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright and Daniel Kaluuya to name a few.
Main actor Chadwick recently broke down about the films extended impact on two terminally ill children who recently passed away from cancer.
In a recent interview at EW SiriusXM Town Hall, the 41-year-old said: ‘All of it has been very personal, just watching the kids experience it,’
Relaying the heartbreaking story, he continued:
‘For me, I would say there are two little kids, Ian and Taylor, who recently passed from cancer. And throughout our filming, I was communicating with them, knowing that they were both terminal. What they said to me is, and their parents said, is they’re trying to hold on until this movie comes.’
Black Panther is out in UK cinemas now.
