Sicario 2 director in line to bring the long-awaited Call of Duty movie to life
It’s one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, with every new instalment guaranteed to shift millions of copies and keep countless joystick junkies entertained.
But now it seems that Call of Duty is finally making the transition pixels and death matches to big screen action adventure as the long-awaited movie adaption appears to have found a director.
Activision Blizzard is ramping up development of the flick, and they’ve got their sights set on a director to helm it, according to Variety.
Sources tell the publication that Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima is in negotiations to direct the COD movie, though a representative for the company declined to comment when approached.
Gamers have been hoping for a COD movie crossover for some time, as the cinematic storylines of the games have always had an action movie feel to them.
In recent years Hollywood stars have even begun appearing in the AAA titles, with the likes of Josh Duhamel and Kevin Spacey taking on leading roles.
COD’s developers had previously played down any notion of a movie adaption, but last year Activision Blizzard’s co-presidents Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk revealed they were hoping to launch a cinematic universe that would take on Disney’s Marvel one.

‘We have plotted out many years,’ Sher told the Guardian last year. ‘We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story.’
She added: ‘The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on.’
Van Dyk let slip their Marvel-like ambitions when he said: ‘It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope … a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie.’
