Marvel’s Black Panther has just touched down in Kenya, the home nation of one of the film’s stars, Lupita N’yongo.

The movie, directed by Ryan Coogler, hit UK cinemas on February 12, but the film received its African premiere on Tuesday in the capital city, Kisumu.

Although the 12 Years A Slave actor wasn’t present at the premiere, many flocked in attendance to see who they described as ‘one of Kenya’s best’ shine at her premiere.

The latest offering from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe was described by Metro.co.uk as ‘undeniably, unapologetically African as it centres itself around #blackexcellence, taking the popular hashtag straight from social media to the big screen’.

Much has been previously made of Lupita’s strong female lead in the new film, which expands on the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War and concentrates on the African nation of Wakanda and how T’Challa becomes the Black Panther.

Lupita stars as a member of the Dora Milaje, a group of female assassins dedicated to protecting the advanced nation of Wakanda and King T’Challa himself.

Black Panther is in cinemas now.
