Shire of Augusta Margaret River Rangers are urging locals and visitors to be vigilant and report illegal camping and fire activity as patrols increase around the region.
Around 6am on the morning of Monday February 12 2018 Shire Rangers were conducting a patrol in Gnarabup when they discovered illegal campers set up in a carpark in the area.
The campers had also lit an illegal campfire in a small clearing on the dunes using native coastal heath as the fuel.
According to Shire Ranger Coordinator Mick O’Regan, the fire required attendance from the Wallcliffe Bush Fire Brigade to ensure it was safely extinguished.
“The whole of the Shire of Augusta Margaret River is a declared Bushfire Prone Area and is currently in prohibited burning period for bushfire season,” he said.
“This means no campfires are permitted.”
The campers were issued a $200 infringement for the illegal campfire and were fined a further $175 for illegal camping in the carpark.
Rangers will continue to conduct dusk and dawn patrols to manage camping, fire and animal compliance.
“We ask that the public please assist by reporting instances on 0419 902 540,” said Mr O’Regan.
