Ryan Reynolds is a rarity in Hollywood. An A-list leading man with serious acting skills, ridiculously good looks, and a sense of humour and wit that puts many comics to shame.

And once-again the Canadian star, 41, showed why – on top of all that envy-inducing stuff – we all want him to be our best friend, as he took the chance to wish his Deadpool 2 co-star Josh Brolin a happy birthday.

Ryan, who plays the titular Merc With A Mouth in the film, is widely regarded as a joker (much like his character, comic book anti-hero Wade Wilson), so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he decided to troll Josh slightly on his 50th by sharing a post of Deadpool painting his portrait.

The joke? Josh is sitting for the portrait as his character in the Marvel movie, Cable, but Wade is painting a picture of him as Brand in The Goonies – which was Josh’s first movie role back in 1985.

‘Painting you like one of my French girls. Happy Birthday #JoshBrolin,’ read the caption.

Never one to miss the chance to crack a gag or help promote Deadpool in a typically off-the-wall way, Ryan’s HBD to Josh is so Deadpool it’s unreal.

The first film was a hit thanks to its ability to adapt the comic’s signature comedy streak and love of breaking the fourth wall perfectly, and with the first trailer for its highly anticipated sequel coming last week the gags have made a comeback.

Eagle-eyed fans will also notice that the picture references The Goonies easter egg in the trailer, which sees Ryan’s character wearing the same Hawaiian print shirt that Chunk sports in the classic adventure film.

Last week the first proper trailer for the film gave fans a taste of what to expect with Josh playing the time-travelling mutant, Cable, who is the son of Scott Summers (AKA the X-Men’s Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s clone).

It also revealed that Ryan and Josh will be joined on-screen by the likes of Terry Crews, who made a surprising appearance in the short.

The Deadpool sequel hits cinemas in the UK on May 16 and two days later in the US on the 18.
