The 2018 Winter Olympics have officially kicked off in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and K-pop fans totally loved that they could hear their favourite artists at the stellar opening ceremony on Friday evening.

As the world’s representative athletes entered the stadium super fans of the music phenomenon could not help but notice when hits from BTS, Twice, Big Bang and Red Velvet played as the world watched on.

As tradition dictates, each country’s athletes entered the stadium in a parade of nations with a fab atmosphere and banging soundtrack to match.

The background music to the parade of nations included dance remixes of classic Korean songs, as well as hit K-pop tracks including Psy’s Gangnam Style, Twice’s Likey, BigBang’s Fantastic Baby, Red Velvet’s Red Flavor, and of course, the smash hit DNA from BTS.

Although eager fans were disappointed that their favourites didn’t actually perform, they were instead graced with live performances from Deulgukhwa’s Jeon In Kwon, Lee Eun Mi, Guckkasten’s Ha Hyun Woo, and Bolbbalgan4’s Ahn Ji Young who all performed John Lennon’s Imagine together.

Fans quickly tweeted their excitement of seeing or hearing their favourite K-pop artists.

Honestly I’m just watching the Olympics to hear BIGBANG being played but I totally forgot how much I was into watching competitive sports.

Fans confessed to ‘screaming’ and being ‘full of happiness’ whilst others kept their fingers crossed from a performance at the closing ceremony.

A fan posted on Twitter: ‘DNA being played as various nations came out into the opening ceremony stadium during the Parade of Nations. That’s somewhat of a performance, right? And even if it doesn’t, we can still keep our fingers crossed that maybe (just maybe) BTS will perform at the closing ceremony; keep those fingers crossed.’

Another person wrote, ‘Army even if @BTS_twt weren’t announced for the #OpeningCeremony of #PyeongChang2018 #olympics we believe they’ll be happy if we help making it succeed cause at the end it’s their home country … We’re a worldwide fanbase so let’s support it?.’

According to CNN, girl groups AOA and Girl’s Day, along with Big Bang’s Taeyang, were made honorary Olympic ambassadors.

‘K-Pop is one of the most well-known and successful Korean cultures throughout the world,’ Lee Kyusang, who is in charge of honorary ambassador management at the Olympics, told CNN. ‘Appointing K-pop artists as honorary ambassadors has brought much attention to the Games.’
