Water samples at swimming areas return good results

Signs warning against swimming at Barrett Street Weir and the Margaret Rivermouth have been removed following the return of satisfactory water sampling results.
Late last month levels of bacteria at the popular swimming spots were considered to be at unsafe levels for water activities, resulting in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River installing warning notices on the water foreshore area.
Shire of Augusta Margaret River Environmental Health Officer Chris McAtee said that bacterial levels have now dropped, but officers will continue to monitor the sites for the remainder of the Summer/Autumn water sampling season.
The quality of these sites is variable so there is a possibility that we will need to erect signs from time to time until the end of the sampling season in May.

“We erect the signs based on bacterial levels, but river users also need to use their own judgement when considering swimming in any natural waterbody.”
