Loose Women fans criticise panel’s ‘deeply uncomfortable’ interview with Paul Cattermole about money worries
Viewers found the Loose Women’s interview of S Club 7’s Paul Cattermole very uncomfortable to watch.
The former singer appeared on the show to give a brave one-off interview about his situation in an effort to set the record straight, but questions about why he hadn’t taken a job as a shop assistant and with Jane Moore revealing he’d been too poor to buy his own shirt, viewers were left feeling very awkward for the poor guy.
Just as Paul had revealed his nerves at appearing on the show, Jane told the audience that the show had been forced to clothe him because he hadn’t been able to himself.
She then also revealed he’d been living on packet noodles, which he joked: ‘I quite enjoy them.’
When asked about his perfect life as a pop star and where it all went wrong, he said: ‘I wouldn’t say it was a perfect life because it’s not very easy doing a pop group thing, there’s the inside and the perception on the outside. It’s one of those jobs you take the rough with the smooth, and the rough is rough, the smooth is very smooth.’
The Loose Women then tried to get to the bottom of exactly where his money had gone, and Paul confessed he couldn’t fully explain.
‘Last year, there’s something I can’t really discuss that happened, so it’s tricky,’ he said. ‘I’ve had an injury and that’s made it very difficult.’. He went on to reveal that during the 2015 S Club reunion tour he went bankrupt, and the HMRC and legal bills were so huge, his entire tour pay packet went to paying them off.
‘So I had to take the next job that came in, and that was the Rocky Horror Show,’ he said, explaining that because of that it stopped S Club 7 from being able to do more.
Nadia Sawalha then asked what exactly he’d spent all of his money on, hellbent on uncovering exactly why he’s so poor.
‘I never got much,’ he said of his earnings in the band. ‘But that’s by the by. Lots of people don’t. Some of the biggest bands in history didn’t make money for years. And it’s expensive to run a seven-piece band. Seven hotel rooms.’
Paul confessed he regretted trying to sell his Brit awards a few weeks ago as he hadn’t expected such a public reaction: ‘I wish it had been more quiet,’ he said.
He revealed he’d taken several other jobs to make ends meet, from painting and decorating to gritting the roads, although Jane seemed to miss that and later asked why he hadn’t swallowed his pride and bothered going into shops to ask for jobs.
‘I have, ‘he told her. ‘I just didn’t want to discuss it because I could tell the way things had gone in the press,’ he said. But pushing further, Jane told him: ‘You’ve got to go back to basics.’
‘If you mean am I cool with delivering pizzas? Absolutely,’ he said replied.
Jane then told him he should become a youth worker as ‘it’s good for the soul.’
He was then asked if he ever wanted to get married and have children, to which he responded it would be ‘amazing’ to find a woman, and Nadia then asked the audience: ‘Anyone out there? Anyone out there??’
Viewers took to Twitter to voice their concerns.

‘It felt unnecessary to bring up the shirt,’ one wrote. ‘The poor guy needs help, not paraded in front of the media. Sometimes the media do more harm than good in the name of entertainment. This was an uncomfortable interview.’
Another added: ‘This was such a hard thing to watch. Paul is a very nervous, vulnerable young man with big problems in his life and I do not find bringing him on this show helpful to him or entertaining. To add to this, humiliating him by saying you bought his shirt was a very low blow.’
‘This whole interview irritated me, I wanted to shake Jane and tell her to shut the hell up. Why doesn’t she go work in retail if she is so obsessed! Talk about totally making someone feel lower when you already feel low,’ added a third.
‘Felt very uncomfortable to watch, I think he could do with some help. Keep going Paul keep your head high.’ said another.
