'Stay at home until further notice. There is an armed man in a car who is shooting in the city,' Mayor Romano Carancini said in a statement posted on local Facebook sites.

Police caught the two suspects after blocking their car in. The two fled the vehicle, leaving the gun behind, but were caught by officers chasing on foot.

The suspected gunman, who has been named locally as Luca Traini, 28, allegedly gave a Nazi salute and did not resist as he was arrested.

Far-right Traini was a Northern League candidate for the 2017 administrative elections in Corridonia. He has campaigned for the 'control of non EU migrants'.

The motive for the attack is not clear but there are reports it is linked to the murder of an 18-year-old girl whose body was found cut up and hidden in two suitcases last Wednesday. A Nigerian migrant has been detained over the murder.

Local media reported a man draped in the Italian flag fired from a car window at two young African migrants shortly after 11am. Later another migrant and an African woman were shot.
