The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Donald Crowhurst and the 1969 Golden Globe Race has endured for decades; did Donald commit suicide? Did he fall overboard? Did he know all along that he would never be able to complete the race?
It’s a secret that will never be uncovered, but new Colin Firth drama The Mercy takes a look at the reasons for Crowhurst’s decision to apply – and the struggles he confronted as he attempted to deceive race officials and slowly suffered from possible insanity out alone at sea.
‘Any damn fool can circumnavigate the world sober,’ says Colin in this exclusive clip for The Mercy, ‘it takes a really good sailor to do it drunk.’
Telling words, for as this clip shows, Donald’s instability was clear even before he stepped foot on his boat.
‘Even to this day, what Crowhurst did is unparalleled because, although people have gone round the world and have endured all sorts, I don’t know if it’s even possible now to construct a challenge with that sort of adversity,’ said Colin of the challenges Crowhurst faced.
The Mercy is out in cinemas on 9 February.
