Eyebrows were raised when Paul Pogba was hauled off in the 63rd minute of Manchester United's defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday but fans think they know what prompted Jose Mourinho's decision.

An 11th second strike from Christian Eriksen and an own goal from Phil Jones consigned United to their fourth Premier League defeat of the season at Wembley, leaving them 15 points behind leaders and rivals Manchester City.

Club-record signing Pogba has drawn plenty of criticism in the wake of the game having been replaced by Juan Mata in the 63rd minute after a display to forget.

And United supporters believe the Frenchman was substituted because he failed to adhere to manager Mourinho's instructions after a video emerged of the pair in a heated debate on the touchline.

Pogba can be seen holding his hand over his mouth as he seemed to argue with an irate Mourinho over the team's tactics during the second half of the Premier League clash.

United fans were quick to share the video on Twitter, claiming it was the reason Pogba's night ended early.

Mourinho refused to go into depth about his decision following the game, saying: 'Just change, try different qualities with different players.'

However, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, acting as a pundit on BT Sport, attempted to explain the footballing reasons behind Mourinho's thinking.

'Pogba's got so many great forward-thinking attributes – athleticism, ability on the ball, can find a pass,' he said.

'But if he's being asked to do that job today next to Nemanja Matic, he has to do that with complete responsibility.

'He has to take one on the chin and I didn't see him have that defensive awareness. That's why Mourinho brought him off early because he's one of his prime players.

'We've all been there as a midfield player and I had it loads during my career with managers asking me to have more discipline – you have to try and take it onboard.

'When you're facing a team where there are lots of threats around you, you have to think 'what is happening around me?' Not just when we get the ball.

'He didn't switch on enough to that and sometimes when the ball went on the other side of him, he doesn't run back as fast as he runs forward and that's a big problem.'
