Netflix have released the first trailer for Duncan Jones’ sci-fi flick Mute starring Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard.

Jones, whose previous credits include Moon, Source Code and Warcraft, is returning to his sci-fi tricks in Mute – which follows Alexander Skarsgard as a man unable to speak who’s searching for his missing girlfriend in future Berlin.

This leads to encounters with a moustachioed Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux as U.S. Army surgeons, who have seemingly questionable agendas.

While the visuals look highly reminiscent of Blade Runner, the tone and characters feel slightly more obscure, especially if Rudd is the villain he looks set to be.

It looks set to be sci-fi heavy month on the platform, with Altered Carbon also set to kick off February starring Joel Kinnaman.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mute.

Mute synopsis

Berlin, the future, but close enough to feel familiar: In this loud, often brutal city, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches for his missing girlfriend, the love of his life, his salvation, through dark streets, frenzied plazas, and the full spectrum of the cities shadow-dwellers. As he seeks answers, Leo finds himself mixed up with Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), a pair of irreverent US army surgeons on a mission all their own. This soulful sci-fi journey from filmmaker Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft) imagines a world of strange currencies in which echoes of love and humanity are still worth listening to.

Mute releases on Netflix 23 February.
