Eagles’ Lane Johnson Sticks by ‘Free Beer’ Promise for Super Bowl Win

Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson says he intends to honor his promise to give free beer to “everybody” if Philly wins the Super Bowl.

Back in August, Johnson promised a big gesture to the fans. “If we win a Super Bowl, I’m giving out beer to everybody,” he said, according to NBC Sports.

But now that the Eagles really could take the trophy, some wondered if Johnson might want to back off that expensive promise.

“I really don’t mind putting in my own money if we’re going to a parade,” Johnson said according to the Star-Ledger. “Nobody expected it, but here we are. I’ll be a man of my word. It’ll be fun.”

But the player may have a bit of an out for his wild promise. Beer giant Bud Light jumped in to offer an assist for the “giving out beer” promise by offering to foot the bill for the big party.

Still, the whole deal sounds problematic. There are scant details from either Johnson or Bud Light for what this offer will look like. And Super Bowl or no, one might think it would be an awfully expensive promise to make to provide free beer for the nation’s fifth largest city! After all, it would potentially mean free beer for close to one million people.

Philadelphia also has some rather arcane laws restricting the sale and distribution of alcohol, so there is no way to tell how that will affect the partying.

Odds makers, though, say that Johnson won’t have to worry about living up to his promise. Prognosticators are giving the Patriots a slight edge over the Eagles, so maybe it will once again be Tom Brady’s day. On the other hand, a popular forecasting model seems to be favoring the underdog, so perhaps it really is anyone’s game.
