6 EastEnders moments which prove Mick and Linda Carter are soap's strongest couple

When Mick and Linda first arrived in EastEnders, they were the epitome of a perfect marriage, but having said that this is soapland and the course of true love never runs smooth! Mick and Linda have faced many challenges together as a couple, one of their most recent dramas being Mick’s betrayal with Whitney Dean. However Mick and Linda came out the other side and have remained as strong as ever, determined to fight for their marriage.

Mick and Linda made their first appearance in 2013 when they bought the Queen Vic, the heart and soul of the community. Since then, Mick’s east end charm and Linda’s sassy personality (and let’s not forget her iconic flamingo inspired fashion sense!) stole the hearts of viewers and the couple remain fan favourites to this day.

They clearly have a deep rooted love for one another, however they can sometimes be misguided in their efforts to protect each other. Despite this, it is inevitable that their love was meant to last as Mick and Linda continue to show that nothing and nobody can ever get in the way of their relationship. With that said, let’s take a look at their top moments that prove them to be the strongest soap couple.

Childhood sweethearts

Mick and Linda have been completely besotted with one another since they were children of 12 years old. Mick met Linda at a football game and I suppose it was as they say – love at first sight. To confirm their love, they had a ‘wedding’ ceremony in Mick’s dad’s pub and their feelings haven’t changed for each other ever since.

It is rare that a couple meet at a young age, fall in love and stay together for the rest of their lives and the fact that Mick and Linda are still together many years later proves just how special their relationship is.

Couple goals!

Coming to terms with Johnny’s sexuality

When Mick and Linda’s son Johnny came out as being gay, Mick embraced his son’s sexuality whereas Linda struggled to come to terms with it. If it weren’t for Mick’s influence, the close bond she had with Johnny (who she nicknames ‘sausage’) could have been damaged beyond repair. This proved that they can work together when faced with a dilemma rather than be at loggerheads.

And the scene between Mick and Johnny has gone down as one of the Carter family’s most memorable and poignant.

When Linda revealed she was raped by Dean Wicks

In 2014, Dean, Mick’s half brother raped Linda following a heart to heart conversation relating to his feelings of rejection by his family. Linda was merely showing motherly concern, however Dean responded to the situation in the most abhorrent way. For a long time Linda hid the painful truth from an oblivious Mick who at the time believed her to be ill. But after she stopped being intimate with him, he suspected that something else was going on. It was later revealed that she was pregnant and there was the added worry that the baby may not have been Mick’s. However, a DNA test was carried out which revealed Mick was the father.

On Christmas Day, Mick proposed to Linda but she turned him down and finally told him what happened. Mick was riddled with guilt that he never noticed his wife had been through such a horrendous ordeal. She reassured him by saying that she had made great efforts to hide it and was worried that he would never see her the same again.

Mick relieved Linda’s fears saying ‘Did you think it would change the way I feel about you? You’re my girl.’

I feel this was one of the most difficult things for them to get through as a couple and that Mick gave Linda the time she needed to come to terms with what had happened. He was sensitive and understanding, making sure as to not pressure her to resume the intimate side of their relationship until she was ready. The two eventually married, hoping for a brighter future together.

Mick’s betrayal with Whitney and Linda’s cancer secret

Linda led Mick to believe that she was staying away from home to care for her mother who had a stroke when in actual fact, she was receiving treatment for cervical cancer. Whitney, who was supporting Mick in Linda’s absence quickly began to fill Linda’s shoes. He became more dependent on her, not only for the business but for emotional support too. The two shared a kiss and when Linda returned to the Vic, Mick told Linda that he loved her. However this was followed by a revelation that he thought he was in love with someone else, meaning Whitney!

This was devastating for Linda to hear as this wasn’t the first time Whitney had kissed her husband, not to mention she was half her age and very attractive! Mick was trying to make excuses for the attraction that had developed between them, blaming it on Linda for putting others before their marriage. Eventually Linda revealed the true reason behind her lengthy absence which was due to fighting cancer. Mick was hurt that Linda had chosen to go it alone rather than face it together as a couple. In order to get their relationship back on track, they both acknowledged that they had kept secrets and that they should get past it. After a lot of blame and comparisons of who deceived who more, they decided to draw a line under everything and start again.

Many marriages in this situation would have crumbled, but for Mick and Linda they faced the realisation that when they are together they gain strength from one another and when apart they are lost and vulnerable, unable to function properly.

Ollie’s fall

During a heated argument, Mick and Linda’s daughter Nancy pushed her brother Lee into baby brother Ollie. As a result of this, Ollie sustained a head injury that would potentially leave him with long term development issues. This obviously had a huge impact on the Carters and Mick initially blamed Nancy for a bleak future ahead for Ollie. However he later forgave Nancy with Linda’s support.

This moment in particular reminded me of the struggle Linda had when coming to terms with Johnny being gay. Mick helped her to see that he was still her ‘sausage’ regardless of his sexuality. Whereas this time around Linda stepped in to support Mick to repair his relationship with Nancy. This demonstrated when the going gets tough they give each other the support and strength they need to deal with the issue.

The threat of losing the Vic

Mick and Linda were made up when they bought the Vic having made their dream a reality of running their own east end boozer. Recently, they had been under threat of losing their cherished home and business when they started having financial difficulties. Grafton Hill were brought in to save the day but unbeknown to Mick and Linda, their aim was to run it into the ground to carry out plans for a new development.

To save the Vic, Mick got involved with an illegal heist set up by an old cellmate of Phil Mitchell, Aidan Maguire. Although the job was risky, he felt this was the only way to make the money to save the Vic. The job didn’t go according to plan and it resulted in Mick being shot. Linda, who was unaware of the situation until that point, was understanding of the method to his madness and felt that especially as he was shot he deserved his cut of the money!

The future of the Vic still remains to be seen, however Mick and Linda continue to put on a united front proving that they can get through anything as long as they have each other. After all what are bricks and water when they have a relationship as solid as theirs?
