Meryl Streep receives 21st Oscar nomination, breaking own record
Meryl Streep has broken her own record as the actress with the most Oscar nominations ever, as on Tuesday she received her 21st Academy Awards nomination for Steven Spielberg’s The Post.
The 68-year-old is miles ahead of anyone else when it comes to Oscar nominations and takes the lead by nine over Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, who both come in second place with a dozen each.
Despite her impressive number of nominations though, the actress has surprisingly only won three.
Her first Academy Award nomination was all the way back in 1978 for Best Supporting Actress in The Deer Hunter, but she was pipped to the post by Dame Maggie Smith.
However, she then went onto win her first award a year later for Kramer vs. Kramer where she starred opposite Dustin Hoffman.
In 1982 she won Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice, and her third Oscar came 29 years later in 2011 where she again took Best Actress for her role in The Iron Lady.
Since then Streep gained another four nominations for August: Osage County, Into The Woods, Florence Foster Jenkins, and now The Post.
This year she will be up against Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird, Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, and Sally Hawkins in The Shape Of Water.
If Streep wins this one, she will sit side by side with Katherine Hepburn who is the only actress to win four Oscars.
More: Donald Trump
Just recently President Donald Trump called Streep ‘the most overrated actress in Hollywood’.
But we think with her new addition to this list, she may have just proved him wrong…
