British man froze to death after getting lost in Alps

The dead body of a young Englishman last seen drinking in a packed bar in a ski resort in the French Alps has been found nearby after being spotted by a helicopter.

Owen Lewis, 22, and originally from Coventry, is thought to have frozen to death after getting lost as he tried to find his holiday apartment in Risoul.

'He was seen in the early hours on Tuesday, and had been in the bar by himself while waiting for friends to join him in Rioul the next day,' said an investigating source.

'The victim's body was found by a mountain stream, and footprints pointed to him getting lost, and then freezing in the snow. However, an enquiry into exactly what happened is ongoing.'

Posters in the Yeti Cave (LaGrotte du Yeti) had gone up with pictures of Owen, asking for people to report any sightings to the police.

The bar and restaurant ishugely popular with a young, international après ski crowd, and it is openuntil 2am.

Owen was working as a school supervisor in Neuvic, in the Correze department, after moving to France from Britain to join his parents.

He had studied mechanical engineeringat college in France, and was passionate about outdoor sports, especiallycycling.

Owen's accommodation inRisoul was just a few hundred yards from the Yeti, but it is thought that hetook a wrong turn.

His disappearance wasreported on Tuesday afternoon, after family members and friends were unable tocontact him by phone.

Owen was said to be wearing awhite ski jacket with multi-coloured shapes on it, light blue trousers, whitetrainers and a mauve shirt.

A helicopter from theNational Gendarmerie at nearby Briancon with mountain rescuers on board spottedthe body at around 5pm on Friday.

When officers arrived on foot, they recognised Owen immediately from the bar posters, and then found hisidentity papers including passport.

Investigations are stillunderway in to the tragedy, with local detectives carrying out enquiries.

Risoul is at 1850m, and inthe eastern Hautes-Alpes department of south east France. It is hugely popularwith British holidaymakers.
