Deadline’s Top 10 Films Of 2017, Part 2: The Countdown To No. 1

It is time to reveal the top five of my annual Ten Best Movies list.

On Wednesday, I revealed Part 1 of the list with Molly’s Game at No. 6, followed by Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (7), Get Out (8), Kedi (9) and mother! (10). Criteria for these selections as well as today’s top five are movies that have stayed with me, that take risks, that stand in the tradition of great filmmaking, that entertain and maybe enlighten, that contain that spark of originality and generally make some kind of mark.

Of course these kinds of lists are subjective, and I can name several other movies that might have fit right in just as easily. It is enormously hard to separate wildly different films from one another and make a numerical list, but everyone loves a winner, so here we go.

I will say that the main objective I had in picking my No. 1 movie was that, in addition to being just a great example of superior craftsmanship and filmmaking, it also was perfect for the times we find ourselves living in today. I can only hope we have as vibrant and exciting a lineup of films in 2018 as I discovered in compiling Deadline’s Top 10 Films of 2017.

So what’s No. 1? To find out, just click on the link above and watch the video of my Top 5 countdown. And have a great New Year’s!
