James Norton tells James Bond fans to keep ‘money in their pocket’ after ‘huge gambles’ are placed
James Norton has told James Bond fans to keep their ‘money in their pocket’ after a recent spate of bets that suggest the British actor is being lined up to play the iconic 007.
Norton, who stars in new BBC drama McMafia, admitted that although it’s ‘humbing and flattering’ fans need to realise that ‘the truth is that it’s total speculation’.
In recent days Norton, who is Bafta-nominated, has overtaken Tom Hardy as bookies’ favourite, with Coral bookmaker revealing that he now has odds of 1-2.
‘I did say to James Watkins, the director, are you just baiting me and stoking the rumour fire with scenes like that?’ said Norton about the opening scene in McMafia which sees him dressed in a tuxedo – a classic Bond outfit.
‘When it’s reported in the press, people assume that I’ve co-ordinated the scene, but I promise you I didn’t. The truth is that it’s total speculation.’
He told Radio Times: ‘It’s really humbling and flattering, but to have my name [talked up for Bond] next to the likes of Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender is just mad. If you’re thinking of putting a bet on me, keep your money in your pocket.’
‘James Norton has all the credentials to be 007 so it is easy to see why punters are backing the actor to play the next James Bond where he is now odds-on to replace Daniel Craig following a huge gamble in the last 24 hours,’ said Coral’s John Hill.
Daniel Craig will return to the role in 2019 for one final film but his replacement has yet to be named.
Hardy, Norton, Jack Huston, Aidan Turner, and Idris Elba have all been suggested by fans and bookmakers.
