Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve says we will never see four-hour extended cut of the film
Bad news for Blade Runner 2049 fans – the director has confirmed that we will never see an extended version of the science fiction sequel.
The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve and set 30 years after Ridley Scott’s original story, received rave reviews, although it flopped in terms of commercial sales.
The original 1983 movie’s cult status grew following a series of extended edits and versions.
One of the general criticisms of the film, which stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, was its length and the fact that it clocked in just short of three hours. And as Ridley himself said: ‘It’s f***** way too long,’
So it’s no surprise then that, unlike its predecessor, an extended four-hour cut (yes, FOUR HOURS) will not be on the cards. Sob!
Speaking to ScreenCrush, Arrival director Villeneuve – who didn’t release a four hour version of that film due to wanting to avoid ‘self-indulgence’ – told the magazine that the idea of the movie being released in two parts ‘didn’t get out of the editing room’.
‘The best incarnation of the movie is what is in the theatre. What was striking is that the four-hour cut was quite strong.
But personally I prefer the one that is in the theater because it’s more elegant, I would say. But there are some scenes that were like [makes boosh sound]. Quite strong,’ he continued.
Continuing, Villeneuve also highlighted the fact that certain scenes don’t make the cut, its because they don’t fit the film.
‘I will say that there’s no great things that are being lost. When I cut something, it’s dead. It means it was not good enough.

‘Even if sometimes I’m cutting my favorite shots, I still strongly think that when it’s cut on the floor of the editing room it should not go back to see the light of day again.
‘I mean, I’m not a fan at all of Apocalypse Now Redux. I thought it was a massive mistake.’
Never say never, Denis. Maybe one day…
