England batsman Alastair Cook joins elite list with stunning Ashes double century
Alastair Cook scored his fifth double century as England rammed home their advantage in the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.
Former England captain Cook scored just 83 runs in his first six innings of the series at an average of 14 but rediscovered his form in the Boxing Day Test.
He reached triple figures in the final over of the first day and was still at the crease well into the evening session of day two as he continued to frustrate Steve Smith and Australia.

His superb innings at the MCG ensured he became the first England batsman to hit multiple double centuries in the same calendar year since Wally Hammond in 1936.
Cook’s first of 2017 came in Birmingham as he scored 243 in the innings-and-209-run win over West Indies.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, Michael Vaughan said: ‘What an innings. Cook’s straight-driving this game has been fantastic.
‘I haven’t seen him hit the ball so hard down the ground. His mind is always strong but his technical attacking play has been as good as I have seen here. Gary Palmer, his batting coach, will be delighted.’
