Mark Hamill has admitted he ‘regrets’ voicing any criticisms he had against Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Mark plays Luke Skywalker in the long-running franchise but he had previously spoken of his concerns after reading the script and believing that Luke had ‘given up’; he also went on to suggest that the character is no longer ‘my Luke Skywalker’ but that he had to do what Rian asked in order to ‘serve the story well’.

Those quotes, in which he said that he claimed that he and Rian had ‘a fundamental difference’ between them and that the ‘crux’ of his problem was that Luke was being written in a certain way to fit the ending of the film, have now been used by many as an example of Mark considering the film not a true Star Wars film – an opinion taking hold as the backlash from a section of hardcore Star Wars fans continues.

However Mark has now taken to social media to tell fans that ‘creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private’.

‘I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make good movie,’ he wrote.

‘I got more than that- @rianjohnson made an all-time GREAT one! #HumbledHamill.’

Mark’s willingness to criticise Rian and the characterisation of Luke Skywalker over the past year has, arguably, helped to feed in to the backlash that should be taken seriously but still, the film is a big success – a week after release it has raked in $800 million globally, becoming the biggest box office film of the year.
