Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie – because the writer says so
For all those people debating whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie, allow us to clear the matter up for you once and for all, and confirm that, well – it most definitely is.
And why’s that, exactly? Well because the writer of the 1988 classic has now waded into the debate – and he wants to assure us that yes, it is indeed a festive film.
The discussion over the Bruce Willis action thriller has been raging ever since 52 per cent of people questioned in a YouGov poll said it was not a Christmas movie.
But it is you know. Because Steven E de Souza – who penned the script – said so.
Steven shut down the matter once and for all after CNN anchor Jake Tapper tweeted him to ask: ‘I’m sure you weighed in on it before, but I’ve never heard you or (co-writer) Jeb Stuart offer your take on whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
To which he replied: ‘Yes, because the studio rejected the Purim draft’ – Purim being a reference to the Jewish celebration which takes place in early Spring (it’s nothing like Christmas in case you were wondering).
Except it didn’t stop there, as another tweeter discussed various plot points which indicated its festive origins, with Steven pointing out that ‘a woman about to give birth also features prominently’.

Still not convinced? Then how about checking out this snap of Steven E de Souza reading a festive Die Hard-themed tale to his dog:
Seriously guys, how much more persuading do you need?
The 1988 action film stars Bruce Willis as hardboiled New York cop John McClane, who has to free hostages (including his wife) from a gang of organised criminals after they storm a skyscraper where a Christmas party is being held.
But the recent survey suggested only 30 per cent of those polled believed it to be a Christmas film – with half of the respondents saying that films set at Christmas that are not about the festive season are not Christmas movies.
Bah humbug indeed. So we’re just pleased that’s all been sorted out now and some festive cheer can be restored…
