Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, everyone was endlessly scrolling through Netflix to find something suitably festive to watch.

Well don’t worry, this year we’ve done all the hard work for you by selecting a whole bunch of bona fide seasonal classics guaranteed to get even the most miserly of Scrooges in the Christmas spirit.

From star-studded comedies and TV specials to yuletide singalongs, here are ten festive films perfect for settling down to once you’ve wrapped all your presents, prepped your Christmas dinner and left that all-important carrot out for Rudolph.

1. The Night Before

Seth Rogen playing a stoner in a semi-improvised bromance comedy?

Stop us if you think you’ve heard this one before.

However, this time around the gruff goofball is joined by two new partners in crime, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Anthony Mackie, for a festive caper based on a quest to gatecrash the holy grail of Christmas parties.

The Night Before doesn’t quite hit the highs of Harold & Kumar’s drug-addled Christmas movie, but the three leads share a convincing chemistry and there’s at least a handful of moments which will have you shaking your belly like a bowlful of jelly.

2. A Very Murray Christmas

Filmed in 2015, A Very Murray Christmas finds the brilliantly wry Bill Murray serving as host of an old-school Christmas special filled with musical numbers and offbeat sketches.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, and with a guest list including George Clooney, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler and Miley Cyrus, this meta-Netflix original is the pure definition of star-studded.

3. Scrooged

And if that’s not enough festive Bill Murray for you, then look no further than this darkly funny yet strangely heartwarming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic.

Murray delivers one of his all-time great performances as Frank Cross, a Scrooge-like TV network boss who discovers the true meaning of Christmas with a little help from three deranged ghosts.

4. Blackadder’s Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol also serves as the inspiration for this 1988 episode of Blackadder, one of the finest TV Christmas specials of all time.

Revisiting several Blackadder favourites, this hour-long classic reinvents Ebenezer Scrooge as the nicest man in England, and a moustache shop owner to boot, to provide a new surreal spin on a story we’ve all heard countless times before.

5. Jingle All The Way

Anyone disgruntled with the over-commercialisation of Christmas should probably give this mid-90s family comedy a miss.

But even though Jingle All the Way is almost offensively materialistic, good old Arnold Schwarzenegger sells the heck out of his role as a frustrated father who will do anything to secure the toy of his son’s dreams.

6. Happy Christmas

If you prefer your Christmas films a little more low-key, then you could do worse than check out this seasonal offering from mumblecore maestro Joe Swanberg.

Melanie Lynskey, Lena Dunham and Anna Kendrick all showcase their improvisational skills in an indie dramedy low on stakes – the most exciting development centres on a burnt pizza – but high on charm.

7. Black Mirror: White Christmas

If holly jolly affairs aren’t your thing, then Charlie Brooker’s typically nightmarish White Christmas is the festive special for you.

A chilling look into the future of artificial intelligence, dating apps and social media, this feature-length episode encompasses everything from murder and torture to the accidental death of a young girl, and will also ruin Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday forever.

8. Bojack Horseman Christmas Special

There’s also this 2014 special from everyone’s favourite washed-up animated celebrity horse in which we get to see a full episode of the lame Full House-style sitcom that launched him to fame.

Sabrina’s Christmas Wish might not be the most typical of Bojack Horseman episodes, but it’s one of the funniest as the anthropomorphic star and slacker friend Todd sit through the groanworthy hokes and cornball storylines of the show-within-a-show, Horsin’ Around.

9. Love, Actually

For some people watching Love Actually has become as big a Christmas tradition as turkey, tinsel and trees.

If you haven’t yet stumbled upon one of the hundreds of ITV2 showings by Christmas Eve, then you can now watch the star-studded romantic comedy in all its sappy, schmaltzy and sentimental glory on Netflix.

10. Miracle on 34th Street

Even cosier is this mid-90s remake of the 1940s classic starring Mara Wilson, Elizabeth Perkins and, of course, the late Richard Attenborough as the is-he-or-isn’t-he Santa Claus.

Indeed, if Miracle on 34th Street doesn’t get you feeling all festive inside, then your heart is officially a lump of coal.
