Thérèse DePrez Dies: ‘Black Swan’ Production Designer Was 52

Thérèse DePrez, the Black Swan production designer whose credits include such films asI Shot Andy Warhol, Park Chan-wook’s Stoker and Premium Rush, died Tuesday at her home in New York following a battle with breast cancer. She was 52.

“There are not many people who have inspired me in so many ways than Thérèse DePrez,” said Amazon’s Ted Hope in a tweet this morning. “How she lived, how she worked, what she made, what she loved.”

Her death was announced on a Facebook post yesterday by her friend and collaborator, the Black Swan graphic designer Derrick Kardos, who had established a Go Fund Me page for DePrez’s medical expenses.

DePrez’s production design credits go back to such era-defining 1990s indie films as Swoon, Todd Haynes’ 1993 short Dottie Gets Spanked, I Shot Andy Warhol, Living in Oblivion, The Doom Generation, Happiness and Summer of Sam.

She ushered in the new century as set designer for David Bowie’s world wide Reality Tour 2003-2004, as well as on such pictures as Hedwig and the Angry Inch, High Fidelity and The Door in the Floor, among others, leading to 2010’s remarkable Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky. She shared an Art Directors Guild excellence in production design award for that film.

DePrez was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2015. Her last credit was 2014’s The Drop starring Tom Hardy.

A memorial is being planned for January, according to Kardos.
