5 reasons The Grinch is the best Christmas movie of all time
Choosing which Christmas film to watch with the whole family can be tricky.
But don’t worry, we’ve got the perfect one for you: How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Ron Howard’s live action adaptation of the classic Dr Seuss book tells the story of the Grinch who stole Christmas which combines a classic Christmas surrealist tale with a contemporary sense of humour.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas, released back in 2000 and staring Jim Carrey, is easily the best Christmas film on offer. Here’s why.
1. Dr Seuss
Perhaps the main reason The Grinch has such appeal is because of its origins – this classic Christmas tale was first published in 1957 by surrealist author Dr. Seuss, who created some of the world’s best loved children’s books and had sold more than 600 million copies of his classic tales when he died in 1991.
The original How The Grinch Stole Christmas novel perfectly embodies the surreal element of Dr Seuss’s artistic vision with the inclusion of otherworldly characters who make up the population of ‘Whoville’, the fictional town in which the story takes place.
The film embraces the bizarre attributes of the original book and cartoon, while also staying true to typical Dr Seuss eccentric lexicon throughout.
2. Jim Carrey
Although the clever rhyming dialogue originates from the Dr Seuss story, the genius of Jim Carrey is what brings this classic storybook character to life.
Carrey, who you might be surprised to learn is in fact the man behind the green prosthetics, perfectly displays his over the top humour and bizarre physicality throughout the film which transforms this somewhat evil character into somebody the audience can laugh with.
Jim also manages to balance slapstick humour, which appeals to the younger audience, with more mature punchlines, making this Christmas film perfect for the whole family.
3. The festive visuals
Every scene in the film is located in the otherworldly town known as Whoville, which just happens to be filled with residents who have an overwhelming love of all things Christmas.
Snowy mountains act as a backdrop to this seasonal tale and everything from the set to the facial prosthetics are based on the designs from the original Dr Seuss book, making the visuals even more magical.
4. The music
A welcome addition to this on-screen adaptation is the inclusion of music, some of which was used in the original 1966 cartoon version of the story.
Songs such as Welcome Christmas and the iconic You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch compliment the story and get the Christmas juices flowing.
Perhaps the most notable track featured, Christmas, Why Can’t I Find You?, is performed by Taylor Momsen, now best known for her role in the US television series Gossip Girl .

5. The heart
One of the recurring themes of this movie is lack of heart, which in the end is ironic due to this film’s very heartwarming conclusion.
The story of The Grinch centres around an underdog who in the past had been rejected by society due to his differences, but is able to achieve a happy ending thanks to the help of an optimistic little girl.
This a story of acceptance, with Christmas as a pleasant backdrop to that sentiment.
The ending of the film is also quite literally full of heart when the Grinch, who once proudly boasted having a heart ‘three sizes too small’, rebounds after experiencing what the true meaning of Christmas really is.
