Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been helmed as ‘the best film since The Empire Strikes Back’ – and it might, just might, have something to do with the cute little Porgs that were introduced in the new movie.

It might be a tiny bit of a stretch to credit the Porgs with all that was great with Episode VIII, seeing as it would be a fine film with or without them, but the flying little penguin creatures are just TOO CUTE not to devour our attention.

So what exactly is a Porg?

First introduced to us in one of the official trailers, a Porg is a fluffy little penguin-type/seal-type thing that are bringing the cute factor back to Star Wars.

All we got to see of the Porg in the trailer was an adorable little shriek and its heart-melting wide eyed stare. Oh, and its cute, fluffy little wings.

But now the film is out from today, we can all rejoice as we can get to know our adorable little friends better in the film.

What does a Porg do?

Lucasfilm Story Group’s Pablo Hidalgo explained that a porg is not a singular Porg, but a species.

Speaking to the official Star Wars website, Pablo said: ‘Porgs are native to Ahch-To, and can be found dwelling along the cliffs of the island where Luke and Rey are.

‘In many ways, they’re the Star Wars version of puffins. They build nests. They can fly. Their babies are called porglets.’

It was Star Wars director Rian Johnson who came up with the idea and name for porgs.

‘I was like, “Oh, this is part of the island, we need to find the Star Wars version of this,’ he said of puffins. ‘And then just story-wise — not that they play a big part in the story — but I knew I wanted to find any source of comic relief I could on the island. And so they were very useful in terms of that.’

While some think they look like puffins, others penguins and some seals, the idea was actually meant to combine a puffin, a seal and a pug dog.

Creature supervisor Neal Scanlan revealed to People that designers sketched various versions out before drawing a ‘sort of little potato with a pair of legs and some big eyes on it.’

One thing’s for sure – social media is pretty much obsessed already.

What did I learn from the new #TheLastJedi trailer?

Porg is the new Han Solo. You can't tell me otherwise.

Lucasfilm and Disney have already hopped on the marketing opportunity, selling a porg electronic plush toy for £49.99.

Between that and BB8, we’re going to be totally broke.
