Sony Pictures International Productions is moving into Argentina with its first local-language co-production there, La Quietud. The film hails from Pablo Trapero who won the Silver Lion Best Director prize in Venice with 2015’s El Clan. Sony Pictures Releasing International has taken all distribution rights to La Quietud in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and the U.S., as well as TV rights in Latin America.

The thriller stars Martina Gusmán, Bérénice Bejo and Edgar Ramírez and turns on two sisters’ re-encounter and attempt at closure on a common troubled past. The film is produced by Trapero’s Matanza Cine and Telefé in coproduction with SPIP. Production has begun in Buenos Aires.

Argentina has increasingly become a source of hot titles in recent years. One of those include 2014’s box office smash and Oscar-nominated Wild Tales which Sony released in some markets. The studio also appears to be making a concentrated push towards more offshore fare, having last month set a Spanish-language remake of 50 First Dates. It’s interesting to note that current President of Columbia Pictures, Sanford Panitch, also was involved with 2013 Argentine hit 7th Floor when he was still at Fox where the local-language division is currently in the process of being phased out.

Says Laine Kline, EVP of SPIP, “We couldn’t be happier that this is our first picture in Argentina. A brilliant auteur like Pablo, and a project like La Quietud perfectly represent the caliber of talent and high-quality aesthetic we are supporting in the region.”

Adds SVP of International Film Production Diego Suarez, “We are thrilled to be working with the extraordinary and diverse cast Pablo put together, and it will be a privilege to share this Spanish-language film with audiences around the world.”

Wild Bunch is handling international sales on La Quietud.
