The sister of former prime minister Tony Abbott has officially filed to marry her long-term partner a week after Australia's legalising of same-sex marriage.

Christine Forster announced Friday she and partner Virginia Edwards have lodged their Notice of Intent to Marry. The two had been engaged for four years.

'It's official! @surryhillsgal and I have lodged our Notice of Intent to Marry #Excited #LoveIsLove #MarriageEquality' she posted.

'It wasn't long after the result, maybe 30 minutes, It was a good conversation,' Ms Forster told news.com.au after the bill was passed into law on December 7.

'We've spoke and he congratulated me and he was very magnanimous. He acknowledged that this has been a great result for the Yes team.

'Tony and I have a great relationship as brother and sister that transcends our political differences.'

Forster was critical of her brother throughout the process, calling him out on Twitter for his stance.

'A plebiscite was your idea @TonyAbbottMHR. As a legislator if you thought protections were needed why haven't you put them in place?' she wrote.

Forster was one of thousands of gay marriage supporters in Sydney's Prince Alfred Park on November 14 to celebrate victory in the national postal survey.

She said it would mean 'everything' to get married on Australian soil and Edwards said their plans were well underway.

'We've booked a date, we've booked our venue, we've got our rings, we've got our beautiful designer and we're doing it on the 2nd of Feb,' Ms Edwards told AAP.

More than 60 per cent of Australians voted in favour of changing the Marriage Act, a result equality campaigners have described as 'resounding'.

Ms Forster, a Sydney councillor, said legalising gay marriage would change Australia for their children's generation.

'Assuming this legislation gets passed quickly, as it should, kids of that age can know they have the same opportunities, the same future, the same rights, the same equality under the law that everybody else does,' Ms Forster said.
