The reveal of who killed Emma Barton is only the beginning of a lot of new drama and several new strands are set to branch out from the revelation that Moira Dingle committed the killer act in Emmerdale. With suspicion, guilt, confessions and an exit, Emma will continue to haunt the village as we head through Christmas and into 2018.

Viewers were finally put out of their misery when a flashback showed Emma goading Moira in an attempt to coax her into killing her – and her nasty words about Holly’s death did the trick, making Moira momentarily snap.

As Moira then confessed what she had done to Cain, he listened intently, knowing that Moira doesn’t have a murderous bone in her body and the situation manifested itself out of a number of excruciating circumstances.

But the truth coming out doesn’t mean a closed book – here’s some of what comes next.

Can Cain keep Moira quiet?

Cain knows what the consequences would be if Moira cracked and admitted to her crime but with DS Benton still sniffing around and looking to solve the case, Cain is going to have to watch Moira closely. He cares deeply for her and will do anything to protect her.

But is that enough or will Moira’s conscience overwhelm her? Natalie J Robb confirmed that the relief of confessing would help Moira but added that the misery is not quite over for her character. Meanwhile, Iain MacLeod also hinted that the killer would face a comeuppance of sorts – though many reckon that Moira has been through enough.

One thing is for sure though, it won’t be leading to a Moira exit any time soon as Natalie has signed up for another year.

Someone is arrested

Next week, a family is torn apart when an arrest is made and DS Benton is convinced that he has got his culprit at last – will the tyre found in the woods be the catalyst for this or has Moira made an admission to ease her conscience?

The arrest will have big consequences and leads to another chain of destructive events.

Harriet is pushed out

Cain’s focus right now is only on Moira and Isaac. Not only does he want to be a good dad to his son but he needs to focus on Moira too to ensure that the woman he still loves is protected from the consequences of her actions.

With Harriet not sure what is going on, she can only deduce that Cain is spending so much intense time with Moira because he wants to get back with her. Will this lead to a final Charriet split?

Ross and Pete feel guilt

Both Ross and Pete still feel that they bear a huge responsibility in Emma’s death. Pete exiled his mum from the village while Ross went a step further and ordered Emma to take her own life on the viaduct – moments later, he had found her dead.

While they both know that someone else committed the final act of killing her, they remain crushed by guilt but will an arrest ease their minds – or are one of them facing prison? Mike Parr confirmed that whatever happens, it will finally bring the brothers closer together as they form an inevitable bond.

Will Bob and Laurel’s affair be exposed?

Another big curveball that the flashbacks threw up was that Laurel had spend an afternoon in bed with Bob – and naturally, they both want this to be kept quiet, not least of all from Bob’s wife Brenda. But these things have a habit of coming out in soap.

With Laurel having admitted it to the police, will the betrayal find its way to Brenda?

Someone gets suspicious

As the weeks go on, someone outside of the police suddenly has big questions to ask and it’s possible that they could be edging closer and closer to the truth of the death. Will the hit the truth – and what will the outcome mean for Moira?

Moira faces an agonising Christmas

With the guilt of killing Emma weighing on her and her struggle with Isaac and ongoing grief around Holly also overwhelming her, Christmas isn’t a time of celebration for Moira. As she looks tearfully at old family photographs, she reaches a realisation – she needs to protect her kids and put them first.

But what decision will this lead her to take?

Adam exits

It’s no secret that Adam Thomas has finished filming with the show and that can only mean that his character’s final scenes are just around the corner. Estranged from a wife who suspects him to be a killer and with a mum who actually did the deed, Adam is about to be thrown into serious turmoil.

But what will be the catalyst for his departure – and will he be leaving Emmerdale a free man or go down taking the rap for his mum?

Coira reunite?

It’s the outcome that fans have been desperate for and boss Iain recently confirmed that he does see the pair as endgame and ships them as much as the fans do. So it seems to be a case of when rather than if.

Could Cain’s support of Moira through this tough ordeal be what brings them back together? Will something good come out of all of this misery? And if so, where will this leave Harriet?
