Alexandre Lacazette admits Arsenal’s target this season has always been to secure a return to the Champions League and claims a title challenge would have been an added bonus.

At the start of the campaign, Arsene Wenger was adamant that the Gunners were capable of winning the title and told shareholders at the club’s AGM in October that he wanted one more league triumph before he left the club.

Wenger has also been rotating his squad to prioritise Arsenal’s Premier League campaign, although they still find themselves 17 points behind leaders Manchester City.

And Lacazette, who became Arsenal’s club-record signing in the summer, admits winning the title is now out of Arsenal’s reach due to City’s strong start and says the primary objective was always to secure a top-four spot.

‘It would be really complicated to win it at this point,’ said the Frenchman.

‘We would really need a miracle.

‘City would need to lose a lot of their games and we know their record.

‘But the goal in coming here was always to qualify for the Champions League and if we could get the title, fantastic.’
