Wilyabrup winemaker and winery owner, Cath Oates, has been appointed to Wine Australias board of directors.

Ms Oates, of Oates Ends and Cath Oates Wine Consulting, said she felt it was important to be involved at an industry level.

“Ive always been involved at some level in every region Ive worked in,” she said.

“I think a level of engagement beyond your own boundary makes for stronger wine communities and benefits everyone.

“Ive always been interested in being involved in a more engaged way with the industry Im passionate about.”

Ms Oates said her initial focus as a board director would be the communication of regional messages in export markets and the development of an effective national sustainability program.

She said her inclusion on the Wine Australia board was great for the region.

“Its important the Wine Australia board reflects the diversity of Australian wine,” she said.

“A representative from a region like Margaret River is important to ensure strategic direction considers smaller producers from regions producing lower volumes of high value wines.

“Id encourage anyone whod like to talk with me about their thoughts to get in touch.”

Wine Australia chair Brian Walsh welcomed the announcement of the new board.

“Our new directors bring valuable skills in governance, research, marketing and the broader grape and wine sector and I look forward to working with them to deliver value for all our stakeholders,” he said.
