Casualty fans have been left devastated by horrific turn of events which saw paramedic Sam Nicholls die from a serious shrapnel injury in the wake of the colossal tanker explosion that tore up the motorway.
Iain was forced to swerve the ambulance as a girl made a suicide attempt from the overpass and as the vehicle overturned, Ruby and Alicia, who were in the back, were left trapped. A tanker then crashed leading to a motorway pile up that left lives hanging in the balance.
As the paramedic team descended on the scene of carnage, Iain and Sam were on the frontline fighting to save lives and they took huge risks by fighting to save two trapped woman as the tanker caught fire.
As a result, they were caught in the huge blast that erupted from the fuel and while it seemed that they had escaped serious injury, Sam had been pierced by shrapnel which was lodged into her liver.
Their focus remained on saving the injured and as Alicia was rushed to hospital, Ethan was there to comfort her in the wake of her bravery against evil rapist Eddie. Meanwhile, Iain continued to hope for the best for the two women he and Sam had risked everything for, little knowing what was about to unfold.
As Sam found herself alone in the back, she realised she was bleeding from the liver and doubled over in pain, falling to the ground in the back of an ambulance. As Iain found her, he called for help but a scared Sam told him that it was too late.
Iain desperately tried to save her but she passed away and now he faces huge guilt for the decisions he made during the disaster – will he blame himself for Sams death?
The emotional scenes bring an end to Charlotte Salts role in the show. She returned last year to reprise the role of Dylans ex but its the end of the road for her now as Casualty staff lose another of their own.
