You might think that with the recent rise in veganism and environmental awareness, that fur would be deeply unfashionable.

But pick up this month’s copy of Vogue and you’ll find an advert claiming the opposite is true.

Despite fashion houses like Gucci, Michael Kors and Armani pledging to go fur-free, February’s edition features a campaign by the International Fur Federation saying: ‘Fur Now And Forever’.

The full page advert – which is said to be worth up to £20,000 – shows three models lounging back, dressed in various animal skins and furs.

And people aren’t happy about it.

Ben Williamson, senior international media director at Peta, has accused British Vogue of allowing ‘this cruel industry slink in by the back door through advertising’, while others have called for a boycott of the magazine.

‘WTF Cancelling Vogue subscription immediately. I don’t support the fur trade in any form! Disgusted that my subscription includes this sh*t,’ writes another former fan.

It’s an odd move, considering that British Vogue has had a long-term ban on using fur in its photo shoots.

During Alexandra Shuman’s reign, fur very rarely appeared in the magazine – leading some people to question new editor Edward Enninful’s attitude towards the industry.

no way! That's shocking. Especially after Gucci for example announcing no more fur. Seems quite out of touch.

But it’s worth pointing out that there’s often a Chinese wall between editorial and commercial teams in such organisations so the likelihood of him having any major sway over which ad campaigns win space is quite slim.

It’s more poor form from Conde Nast as a whole.

Perhaps it’s more a case of stacks of money never going out of fashion.
